High School Theater Overview:

This course is designed to immerse students in the world of theater, focusing on both performance and technical skills. Throughout the year, students will engage in acting fundamentals, participate in two major productions (the fall play "Clue" and a spring one-act play), and explore various aspects of theater including set design, costumes, lighting, and sound. The class emphasizes collaboration, creativity, and the development of individual talents in a supportive environment.

1st Six Weeks - Overview: The first six weeks will focus on building a strong foundation in acting fundamentals. Students will be introduced to basic acting techniques, ensemble work and improvisation. During this period, students will also prepare for and participate in auditions for the fall production, "Clue," or they will pursue a tech role.

2nd Six Weeks -Second Six Weeks -Overview: During the second six weeks, the focus shifts to rehearsals for "Clue." Students will delve into character development, scene work, and begin integrating technical elements such as lighting and sound design. Those not cast in the production will learn about various aspects of technical theater.

Rehearsals for "Clue" (blocking, character work, scene study)

Introduction to technical theater (lighting, sound, set design)

Character objectives, tactics, and super-objectives

Collaboration and ensemble building

3rd Six Weeks -Overview: This period covers the final stages of preparation and performance for "Clue." After the production, students will engage in post-show reflection and feedback, followed by a series of workshops on general theater skills. Auditions for the spring one-act play will also begin.

4th Six Weeks - Overview: The fourth six weeks will focus on rehearsals for the spring one-act play. Students will explore more advanced acting techniques, work on their roles, and participate in the technical aspects of the production.

Advanced acting techniques (e.g., script analysis, character arcs)

Technical theater roles (set design, costumes, props, etc.)

Teamwork and collaboration in production

5th Six Weeks- Overview: As the spring one-act play approaches, students will engage in intensive rehearsals and prepare for the competition or public performance. Those not in the play will focus on technical roles or explore additional theater skills.

Final preparations and dress rehearsals

Public performance or competition of the one-act play

Post-performance reflection and feedback

6th Six Weeks - Overview: The final six weeks will cover a variety of theater topics, including theater history, different genres, and styles. Students will also work on small projects and performances, showcasing the skills they’ve learned throughout the year.

Exploration of theater history and different genres/styles

Scene study from various genres/styles

Small group projects and performances

End-of-year reflection and feedback
