Welcome to the Groesbeck Middle School Theater Program! Our program offers a comprehensive and engaging exploration of theater arts, combining acting, technical theater, and production experience. This syllabus provides an overview of what students can expect in each of the three main courses offered: Theater 1/2 (Introduction to Theater), Tech Theater, and Theater Production/Competition.
Course Descriptions
Theater 1/2 (Introduction to Theater): This introductory course is designed for students new to theater. We focus on the basics of acting, stagecraft, and theater history. Students will engage in drama games, play analysis, monologues, and introductory tech projects. The course aims to build confidence and creativity while providing a foundation in all aspects of theater.
Tech Theater: This course emphasizes the technical aspects of theater, including set design, lighting, sound, props, costumes, and makeup. Students will apply these skills to our school productions, working hands-on to bring the artistic vision to life. Each six weeks, students will focus on a different technical discipline, allowing them to gain experience in various areas of theater production.
Theater Production/Competition: In this course, students will participate in our school’s theater productions, including the one-act play "The Price" and the spring production of "Rotten Apples." The course covers everything from auditions and blocking to line memorization and character development. Fridays are dedicated to ensemble building and improvisation, fostering a collaborative and creative environment. This class is performance-driven and prepares students for theater competitions.
Course Structure and Key Projects
1st Semester:
Theater 1/2:
1st Six Weeks: Introduction to theater basics, including stage directions, acting fundamentals, and play analysis of "The Price."
2nd Six Weeks: Study of a selected play (TBD), focusing on acting, tech elements, and playwriting.
3rd Six Weeks: Exploration of theater history and introduction to script analysis, leading up to the study of "Rotten Apples" in the spring.
Tech Theater:
1st Six Weeks: Set design and construction for "The Price."
2nd Six Weeks: Props and costume design, including research and creation.
3rd Six Weeks: Sound and lighting design, applying skills to both "The Price" and other projects.
Theater Production/Competition:
1st Six Weeks: Auditions, blocking, and character development for "The Price."
2nd Six Weeks: Intensive rehearsals, focusing on perfecting the performance.
3rd Six Weeks: Final preparations for competition, including full run-throughs and dress rehearsals.
2nd Semester:
Theater 1/2:
4th Six Weeks: Study and play analysis of "Rotten Apples," with a focus on scene work and tech integration.
5th Six Weeks: Monologue and scriptwriting projects, incorporating lessons from previous productions.
6th Six Weeks: Introduction to musical theater, including basic singing and choreography.
Tech Theater:
4th Six Weeks: Set design and tech integration for "Rotten Apples."
5th Six Weeks: Costume and makeup design, with practical application to the spring production.
6th Six Weeks: Advanced sound and lighting techniques, culminating in the final production.
Theater Production/Competition:
4th Six Weeks: Auditions and initial blocking for "Rotten Apples."
5th Six Weeks: Rehearsals and character development, focusing on tech integration.
6th Six Weeks: Final rehearsals and performance preparation, including ensemble and improv activities.
Expectations and Requirements:
Participation: Active participation in all activities, rehearsals, and performances is essential.
Assignments: Students will complete various assignments, including play analysis, tech projects, and performance-based assessments.
Attendance: Consistent attendance is crucial, especially during rehearsals and tech work.
Collaboration: Theater is a team effort; students are expected to work collaboratively with peers and contribute positively to the class environment.
